How to Construct a Pond
Contructing a pond is fun, easy and something the entire family can be involved in. With a little planning you can enjoy your pond in a very short period of time. Follow the steps below and see how easy a water garden can be to create.

Step #1
Pick the spot for your pond. Place a piece of garden hose on the ground so you may get a visual of the size water garden you are trying to create. All ponds should be 24 to 30 inches deep so fish may winter over, so keep this in mind as you proceed. Once you have decided the length and width of your pond bring this dimension to Economy Aquatic Gardens so one of our professional sales associates can calibrate the number of gallons in your pond. This will allow us to suggest the proper pump, filter and Ultra Violet Light for your pond. Remember that a water garden is meant to be enjoyed so place it in an area you spend a great deal of time entertaining, relaxing or playing with your children or pets.

Step #2
Bring the dimension of your pond to one of our shops so we may suggest liner size. It is very important to have a measurement in linear feet so the proper liner can be cut. Remember that 2 feet is the minimum depth we recommend and if you add a waterfall we recommend an additional 5 feet to the length. Let us use the example of a pond 9'x 9'x 2'deep with a waterfall. Your liner would need to be 15'x 20' and your pond would contain 1215 gallons. A great size that will be full of fish, plants and a great deal of fun.

Step #3
It is always a good idea to dig your hole first before you order the liner. Idea's change and you might run into something unexpected so the proactive approach would be to dig, get a pond dimension, then come by one of our shops and purchase the liner. We would be happy to make any suggestions on liner size. Use the excess dirt to construct your waterfall and for flaring out the edges of the pond. Never discard any dirt because you will need at least the amount that came out of the hole, and possibly more. After the pond is dug, place an under-layment in the bottom of the pond. The underlayment deters roots from nearby trees that may tear or puncture your liner. Place your liner in the hole and begin adding water at this time if you wish. Or you may want to select your pump and filter prior to adding water. Either way is OK because selecting the pump and filter is an easy process.

Step #4
The hard part is now over and you are now ready to select your pump and filtration. Because of the different sizes of ponds and their certain needs we prefer to help you select a pump and filter suitable for the environment you have created. We carry Pondmaster pumps and Ultra-Violet lights, Tetra and Fishmate filters along with several other products of proven quality. One of the newest and most exciting products on the market today is the Savio Skimmer, Filter and Pump. It is not only revolutionary in it's design but it has uncompromising quality. Once you have selected your pump, filter and uv you are ready for water. Our sales associates can assemble and hook up your filter and pump so you can literally set it in the pond as you are adding water. After the pond is full of water one of the most gratifying experiences awaits you. It is now time to turn it on and see, hear and experience your project. If all goes well and it usually does your water garden will be a thing of beauty and pride for years to come. For further support e-mail us or call one of our 2 shops. We appreciate your business and are here to help and support you with any of your pond and water gardening needs at Economy Aquatic Gardens "Your One Stop Pond Shop."

How To Winterize your Pond
It is very important to winterize your pond each and every year. The proper maintenance of equipment is paramount to the future of your pond. For smaller preformed ponds it can be as easy as taking your filter inside. Place a small heater in the pond so no ice can form, allowing the fish a healthy environment to winter in. Now if your pond is larger and requires more involvement please remember the next few steps. Disengage (Your Equipment), Store (Your Equipment), Purge (Your Plumbing). If you need professional help we can schedule an appointment. If you need friendly advice please do not hesitate to ask one of our experienced staff. We welcome any and all questions.
